How healthy is your food?

Dear Reader,

Were you aware that the average American consumes about 152 pounds of sugar a year! That breaks down to roughly 22 teaspoons a day for each person in America.

High sugar intake has been directly related to obesity, type 2 diabetes, dementia, depression, ADHD, acne, heart disease, infertility, and impotence.

The sad truth is that sugar addiction is not an emotional disorder – sugar cravings are a biological disorder, fueled by the body’s hormones and neurotransmitters. This often leads to uncontrolled eating, which in turn gives cause to the reason why nearly 70 percent of Americans are considered overweight.

Aside from the toll sugar takes on your health, here are some other ways sugar affects you negatively:

Motivation
Sugar affects motivation by reducing dopamine, the motivation neurochemical in your brain.

Brain Fog
Sugar causes brain fog by spiking the hormone insulin, which gives you the rush after you eat sugar. The spike, then, leads to a crash as your insulin plummets.

Insatiability
Consuming sugar only provides temporary satisfaction, which can lead to overeating as we try to satiate by eating more.

Dear Reader,

1 in 68 children today is diagnosed with autism or autism spectrum disorder. Autismspectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex developmental disorder that affects the brain’s normal development and until recently has been considered a genetic disorder. Children with ASD especially have difficulties with social communication and interaction. They also exhibit narrow interests and repetitive behaviors. Some, also,  may experience sensory sensitivities as well. Functional healthcare for children with cognitive difficulties can be a tough call for doctors to make as diagnoses of the disorder have skyrocketed over the past 40 years.his begs the question-  could this really all be due to genetics?

How Can Functional Medicine Help?

Functional medicine has begun investigating other potential causes of autism and ASD. The conclusion has been drawn to recognize environmental and circumstantial factors in the equation, In fact, modern medical literature is now beginning to consider autism as an autoimmune disorder.

Functional medicine uses this research to better deal with getting to the source of these medical issues in order to treat them and prevent further complications.

In particular, functional medicine practitioners are exploring the gut-brain connection in this context.  The widespread medical community is beginning to recognize connections between the gut and a multitude of imbalances previously considered mental illnesses – such as autism and ASD.

In this article, the author draws a connection between Gluten Intolerance and Autism. The results obtained support the leaky gut hypothesis and indicate that measuring IPT (intestinal permeability)could help to identify a subgroup of patients with autism who could benefit from a gluten-free diet.  The IPT alterations found in first-degree relatives suggest the presence of an intestinal (tight-junction linked) hereditary factor in the families of subjects with autism.

There is still much to be learned from these studies, but it definitely is cause for great curiosity and potentially life-changing treatments being developed to treat spectrum disorders. Functional medicine deals with getting to know all aspects of the health issue and implementing positive change to avoid them worsening. It aims to cultivate awareness both in the body and in mind in order to achieve optimum health.

Many children who suffer from spectrum disorders have also been observed to suffer from poor digestive health, so an obvious step towards helping ease their discomfort is to ensure their diet is rich in foods that promote positive gut-health and remove foods which are known to cause sensitivity in this area.

Removing foods such as gluten, dairy, and casein have been proven to show positive effects on spectrum disorders, and parents should also ensure their child’s diet is rich in digestion-boosting foods such as:

  • Kimchi
  • Whole grains
  • Bananas
  • Ginger
  • Lean meat and fish

Another way to help is to make sure you educate yourself about vacciantions and medications that you are giving your child. PLEASE educate yourself, don’t just rely on what your doctor tells you. Doctors are human too, they can miss things and make mistakes. There is so much wealth of information, if you just invest a little time into educating yourself for the sake of your children. The Ulitmate Smoothie

Howdy!

Superfoods are a naturally superior group of foods. In order to be considered a superfood, they must be nutrient dense, yet low in calories. Also, they all have a high concentration and variety of:

-vitamins
-minerals
-antioxidants
-phytonutrients
-fiber
-healthy fats
-quality protein

Superfoods come in a range of forms. Some include:

Green Superfoods (such as kale, spinach, wheatgrass, and spirulina)
These foods have the highest concentrations of bioavailable vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients, and healthy bacteria. They help to protect against disease, build immunity, improve digestive health, and build lean muscle.

Fruit Superfoods (such as goji berries, acai, raw cacao, coconut, and noni)

1/2 teaspoon maca powder

1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon Himalayan pink sea salt (optional)

*I also love to add dōTERRA Vshake or Terragreens to my smoothie to make sure I get an extra boost of amazingness! I’ve also tired it with the Vegan Shakeology, and it is pretty good too!

Read, Read, Read…

Did you know that if you read only 10 pages or 30 mins. a day you could drastically change the amount of knowledge your brain has! You can also expand your vocabulary and articulate better when you are communicating with people!

It has been told to us since kindergarten that we need to read. But why? In public schools reading is push down our throat so much that most of us are completely tired of being told to read by the time we are in third grade. This is especially true for boys.

As adults many people simply do not take the time to read. Sure, they’ll read social media post but even on media platforms everything is video! YouTube has made it extremely easy to get our message across without anyone having to actually read our message.

Audio books has made it easy as well. Now, I have nothing against audio books or YouTube. I think they are great platforms, but we lose a part of the process when we do not read the actual words. Our brains are better able to retain information as we make it stretch a little more. When you read something, you are engaging more of your body and mind versus simply watching or listening to something. When we read we are holding a book, our eyes are processing the letters, our minds are processing the words, and our imagination is inspired to create pictures. You don’t get all of this when you are simply watching or listening to something.
