Dear Reader,

1 in 68 children today is diagnosed with autism or autism spectrum disorder. Autismspectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex developmental disorder that affects the brain’s normal development and until recently has been considered a genetic disorder. Children with ASD especially have difficulties with social communication and interaction. They also exhibit narrow interests and repetitive behaviors. Some, also,  may experience sensory sensitivities as well. Functional healthcare for children with cognitive difficulties can be a tough call for doctors to make as diagnoses of the disorder have skyrocketed over the past 40 years.his begs the question-  could this really all be due to genetics?

How Can Functional Medicine Help?

Functional medicine has begun investigating other potential causes of autism and ASD. The conclusion has been drawn to recognize environmental and circumstantial factors in the equation, In fact, modern medical literature is now beginning to consider autism as an autoimmune disorder.

Functional medicine uses this research to better deal with getting to the source of these medical issues in order to treat them and prevent further complications.

In particular, functional medicine practitioners are exploring the gut-brain connection in this context.  The widespread medical community is beginning to recognize connections between the gut and a multitude of imbalances previously considered mental illnesses – such as autism and ASD.

In this article, the author draws a connection between Gluten Intolerance and Autism. The results obtained support the leaky gut hypothesis and indicate that measuring IPT (intestinal permeability)could help to identify a subgroup of patients with autism who could benefit from a gluten-free diet.  The IPT alterations found in first-degree relatives suggest the presence of an intestinal (tight-junction linked) hereditary factor in the families of subjects with autism.

There is still much to be learned from these studies, but it definitely is cause for great curiosity and potentially life-changing treatments being developed to treat spectrum disorders. Functional medicine deals with getting to know all aspects of the health issue and implementing positive change to avoid them worsening. It aims to cultivate awareness both in the body and in mind in order to achieve optimum health.

Many children who suffer from spectrum disorders have also been observed to suffer from poor digestive health, so an obvious step towards helping ease their discomfort is to ensure their diet is rich in foods that promote positive gut-health and remove foods which are known to cause sensitivity in this area.

Removing foods such as gluten, dairy, and casein have been proven to show positive effects on spectrum disorders, and parents should also ensure their child’s diet is rich in digestion-boosting foods such as:

  • Kimchi
  • Whole grains
  • Bananas
  • Ginger
  • Lean meat and fish

Another way to help is to make sure you educate yourself about vacciantions and medications that you are giving your child. PLEASE educate yourself, don’t just rely on what your doctor tells you. Doctors are human too, they can miss things and make mistakes. There is so much wealth of information, if you just invest a little time into educating yourself for the sake of your children. If you are unsure, ASK, RESEARCH, LOOK for answers.

Your Epidermis is SHOWING

Hey Ya’ll,

The skin is the largest organ in the body with the job of protecting the body from trauma and outside dangers, regulating temperature, and sensing pain. Like with any other organ, it is good practice to pay attention and nurture its health. Your epidermis is also the last place that your body will tell you whether or not something is going on with the inside of your body. Rashes, blemishes, or any other irritations are a trigger that something is wrong beneth.

One way to help take care of your skin is to start a daily routine of dry brushing your skin in the morning before taking a bath or shower.

Dry brushing, appropriately enough, is exactly what it sounds like – the brushing of the skin with a dry brush! I know, sounds weird, but ya’ll this has some MAJOR benefits! The process removes dry, dead skin cells, leaving the skin fresh and new.

You may be thinking that adding another step to your already busy routine is too much, but besides the baby-soft skin, the benefits of dry brushing go beyond just your skin.

Here are some of the incredible benefits:

Lymphatic System
The lymphatic system is comprised of a series of nodes throughout the body that are connected to one another by lymph vessels. The nodes contain immune cells that help fight infection within the body or keep harmful substances out. Dry brushing can help to stimulate the lymphatic system to help the body detoxify.

Dry brushing with a natural bristle-brush helps to remove dead skin cells for softer, more vibrant skin.

Natural Energy Boost
Dry brushing is said to increase circulation, which in turn leads to a nice post-brush energy boost. Maybe not at night, though!
Also, when done properly, dry brushing feels great!

When shopping for a dry brush you want to look for a brush with natural fibers. Maybe ask in the beauty section at your favorite store if you are having a hard time locating one. Or you can always find one online by searching: ‘natural dry brush for skin’

Once you have yours, try this method to get the softest, smoothest skin:

  • Start at the feet and brush in an upward motion, covering each section up your leg with 10 long, smooth strokes. To activate that lymphatic system, it is recommended that all strokes along the body be guided toward the heart or the center of the body.
  • Repeat this process with the arms by starting at the hands and moving up toward the shoulders, brushing each section 10 times.
  • For the torso and underarms, brush in a circular clockwise motion.
  • For the face, a more delicate, face specific brush is required as the body brush will be too harsh.

Note: Brushing too hard can cause the skin to turn red or sting. Your strokes should be smooth and soft. It is uncomfortable, you are doing it too hard.

As always, you are what you eat, what you are putting into your body is a big representation of what your skin looks like on the outside. If you are noticing some funky stuff going on with your skin, start paying attention to what you are consuming into your gut. Try to change up your diet. Eat all natural, non-processed foods! Here are some amazing foods to help make your skin feel and look great all year long.

  • Bitter Greens (arugula, dandelion, and nettle)
  • Alfalfa
  • Herbs (schisandra, ginger, turmeric, and burdock)
  • Sea Veggies (seaweed)
  • Raw Fats (Egg yolks and avocado)
  • Bone Broth
  • Sulfur foods (onions, garlic, pine needles, radishes, durian, pine nuts, and aloe vera)
  • Probiotic Foods (If you want to learn all about probiotic foods, check out The Definite Guide to Fermented Foods.)
  • Citrus (Grapefruit, oranges, limes and lemons)

Allergies Be Gone!

Dear Entrepreneur,

With the industrialization of the food industry over the past 100 years, our bodies have had to deal with a lot of changes. Potential stressors, such as processed foods, confusing dietary recommendations, and drastic changes in food production methods has resulted in the human body’s inability to keep up!. This manifests physically as allergies, sensitivities, and intolerances to various foods. Issues occur with digestion,  as well as the absorption of nutrients needed for optimal health.

The most common food allergies and sensitivities include:

  • Gluten
  • Dairy
  • Eggs
  • Nuts
  • Soy
  • Fish

How Can Functional Medicine Help?

Instead of just removing the symptoms (bloating, gas, skin rashes, etc), functional medicine focuses on the CAUSE of these imbalances. For instance, if someone with a nut allergy eats nuts and their skin breaks out, functional medicine will provide a natural solution to not only the skin swelling but also the immune system response. The overreaction to the proteins ingested can be combated by increasing immune efficiency through dietary and lifestyle changes.

If you’re seeking to eliminate adverse food reactions and boost your overall immune health, functional medicine WILL help you. By explaining things such as elimination diets, environmental stressors, and evolutionary changes in organic human health, functional medicine will aid in the relief of your allergy symptoms as well as ensure they will not hinder your life going forward.

As previously mentioned, in order to ensure your body is protected against allergens, it is vital to strengthen the immune system. If you’re curious about which foods might be causing your reactions, eliminating one food at a time (for at least two weeks at a time) will help you properly identify what could be causing your discomfort.

The following recipe does not contain any of the common allergens (dairy, gluten, and eggs) and is a healthy immune-boosting meal the whole family will love!!

Chilli Lime Marinated Chicken Bowls

  • 1 ripe mango
  • Orange or pineapple juice
  • Lime
  • Spicy chili sauce
  • Onion and garlicoOlive oil
  • Chicken breast
  • Rice

What Else Can I Do?

  • Being mindful of what you are eating is key, but you can also make sure that you are drinking enough water. You should be drinking at LEAST 50% of your body weight in water. (Ex. if you weight 130lbs, drink 65oz.) I enjoy mixing different essential oils in my water so that I don’t get bored with it. Plus the oils help detoxify my body! Here is my current FAV. recipe: Get the oils here.
  • EXCERCISE!!!! Movement is key to getting that gut healthy and moving. Be sure that you are getting at LEAST 20mins of active movement (heart reate UP) each day.

If you are interested in a FREE 14 day excersie, nutrition, spiritual growth plan, comment below!

  • PRAYER! God is the ultimate healer and knows your condition better than any doctor. Take your request to God and let Him give you the wisdom you need to search for in order to combat your allergies. I prayed for 6 years! I didn’t just expect God to heal me though, I took ACTION. I used my resources and I did my research. God gives us resources to USE, not to just read and forget about. Implement, experiment, and help your body recover. It took 6 years of doing all this, and ONE special night of intense healing prayers from a group of young adults who had all seen me suffer from my gluten intolerance. They loved me through the process and celebrated with me.  So, if you eant prayer, comment below or send me a personal message. I would love to stand with you through your search for restoration.

Hope you enjoy!

Are You Mindful?

The Ulitmate Smoothie

Superfoods are a naturally superior group of foods. In order to be considered a superfood, they must be nutrient dense, yet low in calories. Also, they all have a high concentration and variety of:

-healthy fats
-quality protein

Superfoods come in a range of forms. Some include:

Green Superfoods (such as kale, spinach, wheatgrass, and spirulina)
These foods have the highest concentrations of bioavailable vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients, and healthy bacteria. They help to protect against disease, build immunity, improve digestive health, and build lean muscle.

Fruit Superfoods (such as goji berries, acai, raw cacao, coconut, and noni)
These are especially high in antioxidants which protect the body from free radicals and oxidative stress. In turn, they help to prevent disease and cellular damage.

Herb Superfoods (such as nettle, echinacea, ginseng, and aloe vera)
Herbs provide the body with essential nutrients that it can’t otherwise produce itself. These superfoods are great supplements for vitamin and nutrient deficiencies. Each herb has a different function, but they work in conjunction to rebalance and regulate the body.

This superfood-packed recipe serves two. All you need is a blender and passion for health!

2 cups coconut water or almond milk
2 cups spinach, tightly packed
1 cup kale, tightly packed (stems removed)
1 medium avocado (skin and pit removed)
2 frozen bananas
5 dates (pits removed)
1 teaspoon Spirulina powder
1 teaspoon chlorella powder
1/2 teaspoon maca powder
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon Himalayan pink sea salt (optional)

*I also love to add dōTERRA Vshake or Terragreens to my smoothie to make sure I get an extra boost of amazingness! I’ve also tired it with the Vegan Shakeology, and it is pretty good too!
Blend all ingredients together

There are so many more intricacies to optimum male health than meet the eye, as functional health professionals have noted on regular occasions. In terms of commonly observed symptoms, an overall lowered level of energy, as well as increases in insomnia (esp. if your a new daddy, like my hubby) and physical fatigue, are the most prevalent among men of all ages.

As far as general medicine, men are far less likely than women to visit a doctor of any kind to treat their ailments and this makes it even more beneficial for them to become literal in functional health care.

Where Does Functional Health Come In?

It’s important that men maintain their hormone health, as these imbalances can serve as the precursor to serious health conditions such as cancer and other damaging diseases. Functional medicine for men makes sure that testosterone and progesterone (men’s sex hormones) are being produced at the optimum rate which when not attended to could contribute to the rise of more complicated issues later on.
Functional health for men will not just treat potential hormonal imbalance, but it will find the underlying cause of the issue to solve it AND prevent it in the future.

Men would benefit most from becoming more aware of their own physical and mental imbalances in order to treat themselves sufficiently without the need for doctor intervention. The key to this is being open and honest about areas of health which are not at their optimum and becoming literate in functional health care.

Our hope is to enable all men to become more ‘literate’ and confident in functional health, so as to maximize their chances of preventing the onset or reversing the effects of health complaints.

One way to ensure you’re healthy as can be is paying attention to the food you eat. Food has the ability to boost immune health and overall functionality of physical health. Trying incorporating as many of these as you can into your diet and see what differences you observe:

  • Citrus. Citrus fruits
  • Bell peppers
  • Broccoli
  • Garlic
  • Ginger.
  • Spinach
  • Yogurt

Eat up!

Got Juice?

Hey Ya’ll

In the last decade, there has been a rise in trendy juice bars popping up that offer signature juice blends catered to health-conscious people. This is because juicing has become widely accepted as a premium way to get fruits and veggies into your diet quickly and easily.

And let’s not forget the amount of fruits and vegetables! On average, a 4-ounce cup of juice contains a whole serving of vitamin and mineral rich fruits and vegetables. These powerhouse foods contain nutrients that help to protect your body against inflammation, cardiovascular disease, and even cancer. Plus, juicing removes the fiber from fruits and vegetables which allows those nutrients to absorb very quickly into the gut and bloodstream.

Another wonderful benefit of juicing is the boost of chlorophyll (the green pigment found in plants) it gives the body. Chlorophyll is great for rebuilding red blood cells, helping to detoxify the liver, and protecting the skin from toxin absorption from the environment.

When discussing the benefits of juicing, it is important to note that we are referring to juice purchased at a juice bar or made at home with a juicer. Often bottled juices from the store have added ingredients, namely sugar. Be on the lookout for that if when making a purchase. Fresh squeezed is the best option!

Here are some great, chlorophyll rich greens to add to your juice:
-beet greens
-romaine lettuce

If you have a juicer at home, try this mouthwatering recipe that is loaded with healthy goodness. No juicer? Throw it in a blender and blend away until you get a nice liquid consistency (add some high quality H2O *MUST use Waterboy’s accent when stating this. LOL).

Beetroot and Ginger
(For 2 pints)
4 beetroots
4 carrots
2 lemons
6 apples
4 inches of peeled ginger

You want your juice to be as fresh as possible, so cut this recipe in half if you will only be consuming one serving at a time.

Let’s Talk about SEX Baby

Dear Peeps,

Although often considered a ‘taboo’ subject, issues with sexual performance are far more common than most people think. Even in a marriage sex can be a topic of little discussion. I’m about to be real with ya’ll for a minute. Although, I KNOW that God intended sex to be an act of worship, it doesn’t always feel that way. There have been many times when I have dismissed the topic all together simply because of little desire or quite frankly, exhaustion. Having a baby who constantly sucks the life out of you can start to wear on your desire to be intimate. Do I REALLY want to chance having another baby, right now?

Needless to say, neglecting that part of worship in a marriage is not healthy. There IS a reason why God refers to it as an act of worship 😉 So, knowing that I needed to fix this part of my relationship, I naturally asked my doctor for tips, I was given a list of several different prescription drugs that I could look into… simply because, my doctor already knows, you can’t give me a script before I’ve done my research!

Don’t get me wrong, I do believe that there are times when using medication is a viable option, it’s just that, for me, this was not one of those times! Especially after reading all the side-effects that the list of drugs had. Woozers! The trouble arises when prescription medication fails to deliver desired results, which an overwhelming amount of people experience – between 10 to 52% of men and 25% to 63% of women. As sexual health has always been a personal matter and one which can easily become entangled with issues of self-worth and self-image, the failure of medical drugs to deliver expected results can contribute to low levels of self-esteem and emotional distress.

The fact of the matter is that just as every relationship is different, every BODY is different too, and will respond in largely contrasting ways to medication. Functional medicine, however, focuses on helping the individual to not only figure out what is best for their unique needs and symptoms but also how to PREVENT it from occurring again and lower the risks of the condition worsening, using natural treatment options.

Issues surrounding sexual performance can include (but are not limited to):

  • Erectile dysfunction in men
  • Lowered libido
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Sexual performance anxiety

All of these conditions have in the past been treated with pharmaceutical drugs, a large amount of which can have negative side-effects when used over a long period of time. With the help of natural remedies, many people have seen their symptoms decrease significantly and sometimes even completely subside.

What Are Some Functional Medicine Techniques?

By looking at the individual as a whole as a means of treating their sexual performance issues, functional health professionals can identify the root cause of the issue instead of simply making it disappear temporarily. The only way to truly heal from an issue like this is to dig deep and find the root cause – whether it be physical, mental, environmental, emotional, or spiritual. These are the elements which functional health focuses on in order to get to the true cause of the issues like these that often manifest themselves physically.

In terms of sexual health, it is of utmost importance to recognize and acknowledge your own struggles with performance. Not being open to these issues is often the primary cause of them worsening and festering over time. Learning as much as you can about the issue – be it a hormonal imbalance due to anxiety, a nutritional issue, or something else entirely – is the best and only way to make effective changes.

So, take some time to really dig deep! Even if it feels uncomfortable to talk about, DO IT! God created sex for it to be pleasurable, if you don’t believe me, just open up your bible to the book of Song of Solomon! Talk about Pleasuretown.

There are foods you can include in your diet that boost sexual health and increase libido – while we can’t necessarily promise they will increase your performance, improving your nutrition WILL help to ensure that your sexual health is improved significantly!

Foods to boost sexual health include:

  • Spinach
  • Dark chocolate
  • Peppers
  • Green tea
  • Oysters
  • Pesto
  • Ginger
  • Pumpkin seeds
  • Bananas
  • Potatoes
  • Fatty Fish
  • Coffee
  • Red wine

What combinations of these will you try?

Many couples love bringing essential oils into their relationship because of the aphrodisiac properties inherent in these wonderfully natural products.

Elevate your relationship with this amazing blend:

Step 1: Start by using a roller bottle and add 4 ounces of Fractionated Coconut Oil.

Step 2: Add the following dōTERRA® essential oils:

Eating with the Seasons

Dear Entrepreneur,

With year-round availability of nearly any food imaginable, eating seasonally has become a thing of the past. But unfortunately, this increased convenience of one-stop shopping has removed us from the way we are designed to eat! Instead of picking a fruit off a tree, or a vegetable from a vine, we are shopping round, waxy produce from a pile of identical fruits and vegetables in the refrigerated section. This type of eating, while highly convenient, confuses our bodies, wallets, and the environment! So, what exactly are the benefits of shifting toward more seasonal eating?

It tastes better!
Aside from long-distance transportation, out-of-season crops are harvested early, refrigerated, artificially ripened, and left in bins at the grocery store for days, sometimes weeks. All of these factors, especially the cooling and heating, change the flavor and nutrient content of the produce. It’s not just the experience that makes a trip to the farmer’s market or your personal garden taste better, the freshness and handling actually affects how it tastes! It goes without saying, if it tastes better, we are likely to eat more of it. Yummier fruits and veggies equates to eating more fruits and veggies. You can’t lose there!

It saves you money!
Peak season produce is cheaper for the farmer to grow, store, and distribute, and this leads to lower costs being passed down to the consumer. Say hello to low prices!

It supports your body’s seasonal needs!
Peak produce is closely aligned with our bodies’ nutritional needs. In the heat of summer, we are most in need of hydration and cooler foods, such as berries and cucumbers. Conversely, winter offers citrus fruits packed with Vitamin C to boost immune function and equip us against getting sick. During the Spring, leafy greens are abundant to aid in detoxification from the bulk season of heavier foods. Do you see the trend here? Our bodies are aware of its needs, but it is our responsibility to answer to those needs. Eating seasonally does just that!

Depending on your geographic location, different fruits and vegetables are available to you throughout the year, and deciphering between in-season produce and those that have traveled from thousands of miles away is easier than you may think.

Try some of these tips to figure out what’s in season in your area:
-Watch for produce sales!
-Shop farmer’s markets
-Speak to local farmers
-Join a CSA
-Visit restaurants that serve seasonal foods
-Check to see if produce price tags or stickers indicate the region

Lastly, here are some great resources:

– See what is in season near you:
– Search local farms and restaurants that subscribe to seasonal produce:
