I had a coach once tell me, “Character is who you are when nobody is watching.” Being the same person all the time is the best way to build and keep integrity. Acting a certain way around different people and situations will eventually come to light. An honest man has nothing to hide. Like I tell me students,”If you do right all the time, you never need to be worried.”

Samuel’s Farewell Speech
12 Samuel said to all Israel, “I have listened to everything you said to me and have set a king over you. 2 Now you have a king as your leader. As for me, I am old and gray, and my sons are here with you. I have been your leader from my youth until this day. 3 Here I stand. Testify against me in the presence of the Lord and his anointed. Whose ox have I taken? Whose donkey have I taken? Whom have I cheated? Whom have I oppressed? From whose hand have I accepted a bribe to make me shut my eyes? If I have done any of these things, I will make it right.”
4 “You have not cheated or oppressed us,” they replied. “You have not taken anything from anyone’s hand.”
In his farewell speech, Samuel asked the Israelites to point out any wrings he had committed during his time as Israel’s judge. By doing so, Samuel was reminding them that he could be trusted to tell the truth. He was also reminding them that having a king was their idea, not his. Samuel was setting the stage for the miraculous thunderstorm recorded in 12:16-19, so that the people could not blame him when God punished them for their selfish motives.
It takes many years to build a reputation of integrity. It takes only a moment of bad judgement to take it all away.
