Thursday is for Learning

We go through many doors during the course of the day; bathroom door, bedroom door, front door, car door, and that is just the beginning of the day.  The same can be said about life.  Doors have been opened for us but we have to walk through them.  Doors have also been closed and we need to find another open door.

Dose of the Daily Word

Zechariah 1:2-6

“The Lord was very angry with your ancestors. Therefore tell the people: This is what the Lord Almighty says: ‘Return to me,’ declares the Lord Almighty, ‘and I will return to you,’ says the Lord Almighty.Do not be like your ancestors, to whom the earlier prophetsproclaimed: This is what the Lord Almighty says: ‘Turn from your evil ways and your evil practices.’ But they would not listen or pay attention to me, declares the Lord. Where are your ancestors now? And the prophets, do they live forever? But did not my words and my decrees, which I commanded my servants the prophets, overtake your ancestors?

“Then they repented and said, ‘The Lord Almighty has done to us what our ways and practices deserve, just as he determined to do.'”

The familiar phrase “Like father , like son,” implies that children turn out like their parents.  But here, God warned Israel not to be like their forefathers, who disobeyed him and reaped the consequences – his punishments.  We are responsible before God for our actions.  We aren’t trapped by our heredity or environment, and can’t use these as excuses for our sins.  We are free to choose, and individually we must return to God and follow him.

  1. God always provides a way out, sometimes we are just to foolish, angry, or stubborn to see that Open Door. But God is just in all that he does and like the scripture mentions, he will not give us more than we can bear (Cor. 10:13). God mentions that we have a choice, but I believe that the choices that we make also affect generations that will be coming after us. (Exodus 34:6-7 and Exodus 20:5-6) Therefore, we must remember that the choices that we make and don’t just affect us as individuals, they affect everyone in our family. For example, if I were to decide that I wanted more money and rob a bank, I’d be put in prison!! My son would have to live without his mother in his life. He would grow up not truly knowing the love of a mother or really understanding what a marriage should look like. His idea of a marriage would be one person carrying all the load, his father. Therefore, when he enters into marriage this is what he will know and this is what his children will then see as well. Yes, he will have a choice as to whether or not he will carry the load, but it will be harder for him since he was robbed of being able to experience it first-hand when he was younger. He will have to work extra hard on his marriage. So the choice I made affects him and the generations that come afterwards. I believe that we need to break chains and strongholds from our fathers before us in order to heal and understand why we do some of the things that we do. And lucky for us we serve a God who is gracious and mighty. He is willing to break whatever chains and loves to heal our wounds and pick up the broken pieces for us!!!
